Lover’s Key State Park
Lover’s Key was once only accessible by boat and it was said that lovers traveled to the island beach to enjoy its quiet beauty together. Today, it’s one of the four islands that make up this state park. Lover’s Key’s two-mile long beach is accessible by a boardwalk or a tram and is great for swimming, sunbathing, shelling as well as picnicking. The park is home to beautiful wildlife including dolphins, manatees, spoonbills and bald eagles.
Anglers and boaters love this area and can launch from a nearby boat ramp. Kayak tours are available as well as canoe and bicycle rentals. For tour reservations and rentals of bicycles, canoes and kayaks, call (239) 765-7788. Lover’s Key is located on County Road 865 just southeast of Fort Myers Beach.
The Dog Beach
Thinking of bringing your dog on your next visit? You can take Fido to the Dog Beach located on the south edge of Lover’s Key State Park along the Fort Myers Beach/Bonita Springs line. This is an off-leash beach to let your dog run free and play in the shallow, calm gulf water. Many visitors, who might not even have dogs, come to watch them frolic and play together. Beach Safety Tips:
- Designate a responsible adult to watch young children while swimming or playing in or around the water. Adults should not be involved in any other distracting activity (such as reading, playing cards, or talking on the phone) while supervising children.
- Avoid drinking alcohol before or during swimming or boating. Avoid drinking alcohol while supervising children.
- Learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Because of the time it might take for paramedics to arrive, your CPR skills can make a difference in someone’s life. CPR performed by bystanders has been shown to improve outcomes in drowning victims.
- With young children, do not use air-filled or foam toys, such as “water wings”, “noodles”, or inner-tubes, in place of life jackets (personal flotation devices). These toys are not designed to keep swimmers safe.
- Know the local weather conditions and forecast before swimming or boating. Strong winds and thunderstorms with lightning strikes are dangerous.
- Watch for dangerous waves and signs of rip currents (e.g. water that is discolored and choppy, foamy, or filled with debris). If you are caught in a rip current, swim parallel to shore; once free of the current, swim toward shore.
Sun Safety Tips:
- Apply sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or greater at least 30 minutes before sun exposure and then every few hours thereafter.
- Select cosmetic products and contact lenses that offer UV protection.
- Wear sunglasses with total UV protection.
- Wear wide-brimmed hats, long sleeved shirts, and pants.
- Avoid direct sun exposure as much as possible during peak UV radiation hours between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
- Perform skin self-exams regularly to become familiar with existing growths and to notice any changes or new growths.
- Eighty percent of a person’s lifetime sun exposure is acquired before age 18. As a parent, be a good role model and foster skin cancer prevention habits in your child.
